A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across Robyn's (an artist in South Africa) blog, then started following her around the Internet to the sites she visits and/or admires, much to my great delight and wonder.
One such blog Robyn follows is Notes from the Voodoo Cafe, by my new role model (I have several, you know), Ricë Freeman-Zachery, from Midland, Texas. I like what she has to say and how she says it, especially on the subject of good writing, the use of language and trusting writers.
I hope those of you who like to read will check out this particular post, and perhaps wander around her blog awhile since you're already there.
Then go visit this web site and get lost for a bit in the interactive screens about the book, The Selected Works of T. S. Spivet, by Reif Larsen.

Fresca, did you have a chance to visit the TS Spivet site? I've been back twice and still haven't seen it all.

There are people who don't sit around fretting about the demise of publishing (I work in the field, you know, so I hear a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth, and quite rightly, as the rug is pulled our from under the business); but instead LEAN INTO THE FUTURE (as Theodore Sturgeon prescribed, back in the 1950s), and this site in made by one (some?) of them.
I'm no technogeek, by a long-shot, but what they're doing with this site, in promoting Larsen's novel, is so far out there, and I love it! As I mentioned at the Voodoo Cafe, this site really makes me want to find the book - and I hope it lives up to the web site.
This just might be the future of publishing we're seeing here, Fresca.

Since the prospect of being tattooed has always terrified me I had low expectations. But lo and behold, she and I share a book: L'élégance du hérisson. I know you're going to think I'm showing off reading it in French but Plutarch lent it to me - so we're both puffballs or neither of us is. It's an entertaining book about modern France (I get fed up reading Balzac, et al) and concerns a highly intellectual and well-read concierge in charge of a swanky block of flats. The ending is contrived and there's a Japanese man who is so good he almost bursts with that quality but she was pretty young when she wrote it. Good fun. The fact that it's available in translation shows it has widish apeal.
Harlequin - I'm glad you enjoyed visiting them. I've tred not to be a glutton about visiting the Spivet page, wanting to savor it as long as I can, but I'm headed back there after my morning coffee.

I don't think you're showing off because you can read another language, not at all. I regret not learning French when I had the opportunity in high school. I chose art instead. Can't draw a straight line for anything - unless I use a ruler.
That's quite a stack of books she's set herself to read. I recognized some of the names, but others are new to me. I need to visit the library more.

Now I will have two books to check out from my library, Plutarch...whether the poodles' eye sockets are insignificant or merely imperceptible. Thank you for the recommendation.
